Why is this important?

Medicaid is the federal health insurance program for low-income people, families and children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities. It is funded jointly by states and the federal government. Additionally, following the Affordable Care Act, some states have expanded their Medicaid coverage population to include all people with household incomes below a certain level.
